As of right now, we are floating on a giant blue planet, seemingly insignificant specks in this miraculous, ever-expanding universe. Have you ever felt small, insignificant, or even afraid because of the world around us? It is an odd question, I know. But, when we truly consider our universe, it is difficult not to feel this way—
One day, I was walking around outside and saw blossoms blooming on my family’s apple tree. And, it all of a sudden hit me how insane it is that flowers turn into fruit. How could that be? Those flowers, once elegantly pinkish-white, and lovely to look at, turned into a shiny, red fruit sweet to taste? Then I would consider the tree. How, from a seed smaller than the palm of our hands, becomes this large, wooden, oxygen-producing plant? And the stars; a big celestial body of gas that flickers and winks every evening night. The sunsets: colors of glory bathing across the sky as the sun says goodnight. Snowflakes; every single one unique, together making a sparkling blanket of wonder. Gravity: a constant, precisely 9.80665 meters per second squared.
Leaves: they change colors depending on the season. Sometimes, green, sometimes orange, crimson, or brown. Water: one of the most miraculous substances on the planet. It has a specific heat capacity, can evaporate, and sustains life for all living things like you and me.
Did you know if the earth was even a fraction further from the sun, our planet would be an inhospitable ball of ice locked into a never-ending ice age? There is simply no way that an intelligent Creator did not create this universe. When we see the miracles of nature, we often forget that we too are miracles. The fact that we can see, think, smell, touch, hear, laugh, and breathe is astonishing.
We are not insignificant. For, we are created by the same God who created the sunsets, the leaves, gravity, and the stars. It is foolish to believe that there is no God, for who, then, created all these things? Can I or you create a single blade of grass? No. We are creatures living amongst creation. We are not insignificant because we are made in the image of God. Genesis 1:27 states, “So God created man in His own Image; In the image of God, He created him; male and female He created them.”
When I was younger, I was afraid of being insignificant. The world around me seemed much more beautiful, startling, and miraculous than I could ever be. Yet, Jesus Christ tells us that we are of more value than this created order. He says in Matthew 6:26, “Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your Heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?” Our Father loves us, and wants to spend eternity with us, and He is willing to forgive us of our sins if we seek Him all the days of our life, turning away from the sin that only binds us in chains. Jesus Christ, our God who created everything you see, wants to meet you one day, face to face.
